Whether you choose to carry every day or protect your home and family, the facts don’t lie: gun ownership for self-defense is not only safe, it’s making a difference. Let Federal help guide your journey to a stronger, safer you—we’re proud to be Your Partner In Protection.
In a study conducted by Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz, the completion of a robbery when a victim did not resist was a whopping 88 percent. What’s more, the victim was also injured 25 percent of the time.
But when the robbery suspect recognized the victim had a gun and resisted, even verbally by announcing they had a gun, the success rate of the criminal dropped an astounding 30 percent and the victim injury rate fell to just 17 percent.
According to a U.S. Department of Justice report, the increased prevalence of legal gun ownership among Americans has played a significant role in the reduction of both gun-related homicides and crime. In research from 1993 to 2011, firearm-related homicides declined 39 percent. Even more dramatic was the decline of non-fatal firearm crimes over this same time; the number of incidents went from 1.5 million to just over 467,000 victimizations, a decline of 69 percent.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 3.7 million homes are broken into each year. In nearly half of those incidents (41 percent), the intruder used a firearm. When those break-ins involved the home of someone who uses a gun for self-defense, the success rate of the intruder dropped dramatically.
It’s estimated that somewhere between 500,000 to 3 million defensive gun uses occur each year. Perhaps even more importantly, only 8 percent of the time did the victim actually discharge the firearm during the encounter. It’s powerful proof that when you choose to defend yourself with a firearm, you’re empowered by knowledge, planning and confidence – not necessarily the use of deadly force.
