Rifle FAQs

There are small differences that make each of these cartridges unique. Most notably are the standards in which pressure is tested and measured. You can shoot 223 Rem. ammunition in a 5.56x45mm chamber, but not the other way around due to these pressure variances.

When there is a concern regarding our ammunition, we request that you please call us at (800) 379-1732 to provide your name, address, type of ammunition, type of failure, and the firearms used. Once we receive this information, we may send you a prepaid shipping label, and all appropriate packaging materials to send the ammunition back for testing. We will contact you once our evaluation and testing have been completed to determine the best course of action in order to resolve this issue for you.

The information that is presented in our rifle ammunition ballistics chart was gathered by testing our ammunition in near-perfect conditions at a consistent low humidity temperature of 68°F. Our tests are conducted in an enclosed area, with a 24-inch test barrel in most cases, with the barreled action locked into a vise. Other factors including the amount of wear and interior barrel dimensions in your firearm and the outside temperature affect the velocity. As a result, your velocities and trajectories might vary from those published on our ballistics charts.

Since 1922, Federal Ammunition has been manufactured in Anoka, Minnesota. Today, the factory sprawls across 175 acres, with more than 700,000 square feet of manufacturing space.

Federal is one of the world’s biggest and most recognizable ammunition brands. Today, we build one of the industry’s largest and most complete rifle ammo product lines, and ammunition for rimfire, shotguns, handguns and muzzleloaders, as well as reloading components.

The most common rifle hunting ammo consists of cartridges like 308 Win., 30-06 Sprg., 270 Win., 6.5 Creedmoor, and 300 Win. Mag. Federal offers a wide selection of these and other cartridges loaded with a variety of bullet types that are well suited for deer, big game, varmints, target shooting and more.

If they are in good condition, fired cases can generally be reloaded. Federal brass cases can withstand multiple reloads. Just be sure to thoroughly inspect cases before each reloading session and follow all reloading protocols and warnings. Federal Peak Alloy cases are reloadable as well, but they require different processes.
